German II Course Syllabus

This course is the continuation of the study of Germany; its language, country, and culture.  Class will begin with a review of material learned in German I.

TEXT:  Kraft, Wolfgang S. Deutsch Aktuell  II.  Fourth Edition.  St. Paul, MN:
              EMC/Paradigm, 1998.
              workbook and test book;  supplemental materials

COURSE MATERIAL:
Vocabulary – establish a vocabulary for use in conversation and writing
Grammar – learn correct forms and placement of grammar needed to speak and
               write correctly
Writing – compose sentences and paragraphs about topics using learned
               vocabulary and correct grammar
Listening Comprehension – learn to recognize and discriminate vowel and
                consonant sounds using recorded and teacher dictated material
Speaking Comprehension – learn correct pronunciation and intonation of words
                through drills and conversation
Reading Comprehension – read and comprehend sentences and selections within
                the range of vocabulary and grammar learned; comprehend and answer
                questions to related readings introduced in class; translate from English to
                German and German to English
Culture – become acquainted with the customs, lifestyles, and geography of
                       Germany and German-speaking countries

CLASS STRUCTURE:  this format will be followed the majority of the time:
     Vocabulary
         introduced in class – pronunciation practice
         homework review (students may make flashcards if so desired)
         quizzes – for spelling and comprehension
     Grammar
          introduction of material by teacher; notes taken by students
          classroom practice, followed by homework practice
        class review with homework check
              graded assignment
         quiz – assess comprehension; test – chapter review;
         listening comprehension test
***CLASS PARTICIPATION IS EXPECTED – GRADE WILL REFLECT THIS    

MATERIALS NEEDED:
      A)  notebook for notes (single, not one that is used for another class)
      B)  folder – loose papers are NOT to be stored in the textbook
      C)  pens – standard blue or black ink
GRADING SYSTEM:
      All assignments, quizzes and tests are graded on a point basis.  Amount of points will
           vary depending on the nature and length of the assignment, quiz, or test.
      Quarter – your total points possible divided by the total points possible for the
           grading period..
      Semester – 1st  quarter = 40%; 2nd quarter = 40%; Exam = 20%

EXPECTATIONS:
     A) Be prepared for class.
     B)  DISCUSSION, NOT DISRUPTION - Appropriate behavior and language always.
     C)  It is the student’s responsibility to ask questions or seek additional help if he or she
           does not understand.
     D)  Assignments are to be written legibly in standard blue or black ink only.
     E)  Assignments are expected on time; unless otherwise specified, work will be
           accepted one day late for ½ credit, after that a zero will be assigned.
     F)  Attendance is recorded.  Absences must be excused according to school policy in
     order for any grade to be counted. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure
     that the excused absence is shown to the teacher, that any assigned work due
    during the absence is handed in to the teacher, and that any work assigned during
    the absence is obtained from the teacher.
          Generally, one (1) make-up day will be allowed for each day of absence before the
          assignment is considered late.
     G)  Keep all of your work until the end of each grading period in case of error.

CLASSROOM GUIDELINES
 A)  All Calvert High School policies will be enforced (Refer to student handbook).
 B)  Show respect for your teacher, your classmates, yourself, and your school.
 C)  Only appropriate language is to be used at all times.
 D)  Seats will be assigned during the first week of class and you are expected to be in
       your seat when the bell rings.
 E)  Only one person is allowed to leave the room at a time: before class begins or at the
       end of instruction, or in an emergency situation.
 F)  Cheating and plagiarism incidents may be reported to the administration and the
       parent(s) of the student(s) involved.  All students involved will share the grade.
 G) Only gum and water are allowed in this room, if used properly
 H)  Fans, drapes, and windows are NOT to be adjusted without permission.
