This literature course includes the study of the short story, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, and the novel. In addition to reading, grammar and writing skills will be reviewed and practiced in connection with the literature being studied at the time. Writing will focus on the analytical and persuasive essay format.

Supplemental Material: Novels (read as a class)
Material Covered in Class: (adherence depends on calendar/schedule changes)
First semester – Units 1-5 in textbook; novel
Second semester – Units 6-10 in textbook; novel
Research Paper: A research paper will be done in stages with the final draft due in the
3rd quarter. It will follow the MLA format. Review and instruction of
this format will be provided.
***Details of the expectations of this assignment will be provided as it is worked on.
***CLASS PARTICIPATION IS EXPECTED. Occasionally a grade will reflect
this.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
A) notebook for notes (single, not one that is used for another class)
B) folder – loose papers are NOT to be stored in the textbook
C) pens – standard blue or black ink
D) Optional - colored pencils/red pen for correcting and marking work on papers
jump drive/thumb drive, etc.
GRADING SYSTEM:
All assignments, quizzes and tests are graded on a point basis. Amount of points will
vary depending on the nature and length of the assignment, quiz, or test.
Quarter – your total points possible divided by the total points possible for the
grading period..
Semester – 1st quarter = 40%; 2nd quarter = 40%; Exam = 20%
EXPECTATIONS:
A) Be prepared for class.
B) DISCUSSION, NOT DISRUPTION - Appropriate behavior and language always.
C) It is the student’s responsibility to ask questions or seek additional help if he or she
does not understand.
D) Assignments are to be written legibly in standard blue or black ink only.
E) Assignments are expected on time; unless otherwise specified, work will be
accepted one day late for ½ credit, after that a zero will be assigned.
F) Attendance is recorded. Absences must be excused according to school policy in
order for any grade to be counted. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure
that the excused absence is shown to the teacher, that any assigned work due
during the absence is handed in to the teacher, and that any work assigned during
the absence is obtained from the teacher.
Generally, one (1) make-up day will be allowed for each day of absence before the
assignment is considered late.
G) Keep all of your work until the end of each grading period in case of error.
CLASSROOM GUIDELINES
A) All Calvert High School policies will be enforced (Refer to student handbook).
B) Show respect for your teacher, your classmates, yourself, and your school.
C) Only appropriate language is to be used at all times.
D) Seats will be assigned during the first week of class and you are expected to be in
your seat when the bell rings.
E) Only one person is allowed to leave the room at a time: before class begins or at the
end of instruction, or in an emergency situation.
F) Cheating and plagiarism incidents may be reported to the administration and the
parent(s) of the student(s) involved. All students involved will share the grade.
G) Only gum and water are allowed in this room, if used properly
H) Fans, drapes, and windows are NOT to be adjusted without permission.
